Bareboating, briefly

You hire the boat and sail it yourself — no crew unless you ask for one. Queensland requires no boat licence; operators assess experience with a sailing resume or phone chat, then brief you thoroughly before casting off. If your experience is thin, they'll add a skipper for a day or the week.

Catamarans dominate the fleet — stable, roomy and beach-friendly. Choosing between hulls: cat vs monohull. Timing your trip: best time to sail.

FAQs

Your Questions, Answered

Is bareboating safe for beginners?

Yes — it's designed for them. Line-of-sight navigation, protected waters, mandatory briefings and VHF support. Thousands of first-timers do it every year.

Do I need a licence?

No. Queensland has no recreational boat licence requirement — the operator's experience check and briefing replace it.

How many people fit aboard?

3–5 cabins sleeping 6–10. Comfort peaks at 4–6 adults.

What if the weather turns?

Cid Harbour and Nara Inlet are all-weather refuges within reach of every anchorage. Operators monitor conditions throughout your charter.

Can we get help mid-charter?

Yes — your operator is on the VHF and phone, with support vessels in serious cases.

How far ahead should we book?

Peak season (June–August) fleets sell out 6+ months ahead. Shoulder season needs 2–3 months.
